My interest in food began by watching the Food Network after school. I was drawn to the creativity of the chefs and how they made cooking, a chore to most, seem interesting. I was especially interested in baking and cake decorating competitions that aired in the evenings. This led to my own experimentation with baking. I found a knack for cake decorating which inspired me to create my own household business, My Bakery and Cupcakery, at the age of 16. I baked and decorated cookies, cakes, and cupcakes for a variety of occasions. I created a social media platform to share my work, which in turn brought me more success. At peak business times, summers and holidays, I was averaging four to five orders a week while juggling school and playing multiple sports.
When it came time to decide on a college course path, I was lost. I wanted to continue my passion for baking while also competing in college volleyball. This led me to Southwestern Illinois College where I studied Culinary Arts and Food Management. While pursuing my Associate Degree, I worked at the on-campus daycare and was captain of the volleyball team. After completing my degree, I soon realized my dream of owning my own bakery was just that, a dream. Baking was more of a hobby than a career path for me to pursue. I wanted to do more than bake sweets that put a smile on people’s faces.
After deciding that I should continue my education, I searched for a program that fit with my interests. I come from a family of nurses and share their passion for healing others. Part of me wanted to follow in their footsteps, but also keep an emphasis on food. Soon I discovered a career where I could have the best of both worlds, Dietetics.
Finally, I found Fontbonne University. Here I began pursuing my true dream career, becoming a Registered Dietitian. While furthering my education I again played volleyball, joined campus organizations, coached a youth team, and continued my baking hobby. I even found time to volunteer for various organizations off campus. I was also able to gain experience outside of the classroom by working in a hospital diet office, and in my current position at a senior rehab center. Fontbonne has introduced me to a career path I am eager to pursue.
This portfolio will showcase my personal interests and professional accomplishments thought my educational path to becoming a Dietetic Intern and why I believe I would be a great fit for this program.
